First of all, I would like to preemptively apologize if the formatting in this post is wonky. I'm used to lurking and my ability to fiddle with html and other such things is rusty.
So. Today there way a bit of a brouhaha when this article adala-news.fr/2013/05/lanime-lady-bug-date-en-france/ was posted on the ladybug facebook page and on tumblr. The article states that Ladybug will have 52 episodes and that it will be released just over a year from now in September 2014. I have been heavily abusing the search by date function in Google the past week or so in the hope of finding new information and content as it is released, and so this little bombshell completely blindsided me. But when I tried to use the “past week” search to find out if there was anything else confirming this information, I couldn't find the article at all. When I checked the article again, I noticed that it was published back in May, and had somehow evaded the attention of pretty much everyone in the fandom for several months. When I searched “Ladybug” in the website's search engine, there was one other article for the show, adala-news.fr/2012/09/lanime-lady-bug-annonce/ published September 5th, around the same time the pv was, stating the same information: that Ladybug would be released in September 2014, with 52 episodes. I have only been in the fandom a few weeks, but from what my archive binging has told me, there was no release date at that time, and it wasn't until a little while after the pv was released that Zagtoon tentatively stated that Ladybug would be released around August, and also that there would be 26 episodes. It wasn't until even later that they started doing the back-and-forth, 26 vs 52 episode waffling. To be fair though, I wasn't even aware of this show until a few weeks ago, so I might have mixed up the earlier stuff in my head. Did the waffling come first, or the tenative release date? I'm sure one of you guys know. Also, for some reason, both articles refer to Chat Noir as Black Cat. At first I thought it was google translate messing with his name, but that's what they call him in the article.
With regards to the Brazilian broadcast, it is unfortunately not happening in August according to these articles: www.anmtv.xpg.com.br/ladybug-anime-nao-estreia-no-gloob-em-agosto/ www.infoanimation.com.br/2013/08/destaques-do-canal-gloob-em-agosto.html Apparently Gloob got Ladybug as part of package deal, and most of the titles in that package would be broadcast in August, but Ladybug would not be one of them. I was still optimistic for an August or September release in France because in both articles the writers were of the opinion that the reason for the delay was because the lines were still being dubbed in Portuguese. Furthermore, Gloob had previously stated that they wouldn't be broadcasting any anime because they believed it to be violent and morally reprehensible. If you look in the comments section of the original article about Gloob's acquisition, people were arguing about Gloob and their stance on anime and what the broadcast of Ladybug could mean for the future of anime in Brazil. I came to the conclusion that since Gloob has managed the feat of holding anime in lower esteem than even 4kids, they were probably doing a hack-and-slash dub full of censoring and other assorted bullshit, and that was probably the reason for the sudden delay. Though with this new/old information, I guess it remains to be seen.
Thing is though, even though Gloob backed out of releasing it in August, they still said in the July article that there would be 26 episodes, the article from back in May stated it would be 52. So, who's slinging around the misinformation? Either way, it seems that Zagtoon and its affiliates are as good at press releases as they are at streamlined and bug-free web designing. Furthermore, going back to the article that the French site posted in September--it doesn't make sense when you look at this image my.opera.com/2to/albums/showpic.dml?album=13153912&picture=171838752#bigimg from Thomas Astruc's own website, posted a few weeks after that article was published, implying a release date of December 2013, though whether it's the date for the movie's release, or the series release isn't entirely clear. You'll also note that in a previous thread on this forum, one of the members contacted Zagtoon about the release date a few weeks ago, and Zagtoon refused to divulge any information. If the article from May was accurate, then why was Zagtoon being coy about information that was available for months? Unless, of course, the information was out of date/inaccurate.
On one hand, I really don't want to wait over a year for this to come out, and miscommunication seems to be running rampant, what with the whole “Ladybug will be all CGI—wait no it won't!” business from back in April. I am thus tempted to take any released information that seems batshit with a grain of salt, and this seems like one of those times. On the other hand, it seems unlikely that Zagtoon would keep a series that they're so very confident about under wraps and almost completely unadvertised if they were releasing it either this month or the next, and the French website did not seem to be otherwise disreputable.
The only sensible conclusion that I can come to is that Ladybug will be released sometime this year, that it will be 26 episodes, and that the movie will come after that, and the September 2014 release date is probably is for the second season featuring all those new superheroes/magical girls. I could be wrong though, I guess time will tell, because Zagtoon sure isn't .
On a less frustrating note, Method animation seems to have uploaded some new official images to their Ladybug page, but only in the French version—the “gallery” button doesn't work on the English version of the page. I'm assuming they're new because I haven't seen them anywhere on an image search, and I have seen anyone discussing or linking to them. One shows Marinette at some sort of fashion show, another has a full-body shot of the GLORIOUS PIGEON MAN! And a third is a slightly modified version of the official artwork of Marinette mooning over Felix (or Adrien, whatever they're calling him nowadays,) it now has several roughly-sketched people laughing in the background. Here's the link to that: www.methodanimation.fr/index_methode_fr.html
EDIT: So, I was looking a bit more closely at the Method page. If you scroll down on the synopsis section it says there will be 26 episodes I think it has gotten to the point where we'll need a scorecard to keep track of conflicting release dates/episode numbers. Or I could just flip a table. One or the other.
