Aaaaand random, far-fetched headcanon about characters based on their names, GO:
Marinette sounds a whole lot like marionette, as in the puppets you control from attached strings from far up above. Cue her inheriting the ladybug earrings, magical girl shows' tendencies to talk about fate, comparisons to Princess Tutu, and the Monarch residing in a giant, above-it-all airship thing.

I looked it up in some name meaning websites and found this:
Marinette is a charming, pleasant and attractive woman who is eager to please and be loved in return. Emotionally she is sensitive, sympathetic and considerate, and is prepared to make considerable efforts to ensure that peace and harmony prevail in her world. She is just as sensitive to beauty, and hers is no exception.[...]Her weakest link is her hypersensitivity which - combined with her active imagination and nervous disposition - occasionally results in bouts of anxiety. She is an easy-going and sociable individual who enjoys life´s pleasures and communicates with ease, charm, diplomacy and humor. [...]because the former tendency can cause her to be fragile, timid and inclined to dependency; whilst the latter pushes her to great, even grandiose achievements. She could either attempt to achieve her goals by developing her strengths of perfectionism, patience and determination, or she could choose to escape into her inner sanctuary of daydreams and imagination, indolence and indecision, perhaps finding solace in a lover´s arms to compensate for her lack of ambition.
Is it just me or some of that description goes along with what we've seen so far?

Oh my god that's a (seemingly) insanely accurate description of what we've seen of Marinette.

I tend to accidentally spell it Marionette all the time before going back and fixing it.

Wow, that description of Marinette's name is really accurate I'm more curious about Marinette's surname actually. I do hope we get to see a Marinette's name in Chinese. I really want to see a full Chinese name somehow although the chances is slim? /is Chinese myself, so yeah. Since it's romanised as Cheng, there are a few possibilities. If we assume that the hanyu pinyin is Cheng, here are the 2 most likely possiblities from the list of common Chinese surnames: (credits to Wikipedia!) 1. 程 (chéng) is the most obvious one here. -Originates from Henan province. -Can mean rule / order / regulations / formula / journey / procedure / sequence depending on context 2. 郑 or 鄭 (Simplified/Traditional). -Hanyu pinyin is zhèng but according to the Wade system (which was used to transcript Chinese to English), it would be Cheng. -Originates from the Fujian province. -No meaning but it came from the Zheng state during the Warring States period I'd think that 2 is more possible despite how the hanyu pinyin is different. IIRC, more people migrate from Fujian to other countries since it's a coastal province. Also, it is more common than the first one. However, diaspora can change surnames even more. For example, my surname is 林 (lín) but is romanised as Ling due to my dialect group. This variation is not listed in Wikipedia at all. Sorry for the long post, it's just my two cents here?

I couldn't get much about her surname. But maybe from her parents we could get to know something (when that information comes out hopefully).
If we go in depth could be related to real life family lines that moved to France and the family tree increased, maybe they used that as reference.

*sighs at the little information we have* Speculation is still fun though. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_diaspora_in_FranceThis Wiki article states that France has the largest Chinese population in Europe and the population is 600K which is almost 1% of the total population. Otherwise I can't find anything else about the Chinese diaspora in France... It would be really cool if the creators used real life as a reference. After all they seemed to have done that with Marinette's name *A*

It's really cool that Marinette is half Chinese, I suppose? I'm guessing one of her parents is French and the other is Chinese. Although I suppose they could both be Chinese, but living in France. Although I always sort of liked the idea of Marinette having grown up in China and then moved to France. At any rate, I think she's definitely a new girl of some kind (even if she lived in another part of France). Because otherwise I'm pretty sure she and Felix would have met or known each other in some capacity. The trailer seems to clearly show Chat Noir seeing Ladybug for the first time, although of course this could be an example of Never Trust a Trailer. I'm going off the idea that Marinette got her magic ladybug earrings elsewhere, but then when her family moved to Paris she just continued her Ladybug superhero stuff there, where Chat Noir/Felix had already been living. Just some of my thoughts.

Eh, that might be a case of But Not Too Foreign going on.

True on the But Not Too Foreign. Blue hair and eyes defies all logic anyway.
I also have another idea: Marinette lived in China and is in fact full Chinese. She already had the earrings but the powers only activated in Paris due to the presence of Chat Noir, Pigeon Guy and the villains. It's like she's fated to go to Paris for the battle that was going on there or something. If luck is a theme of this series, I think fate has something to do with it too.
oot: can this be like the unofficial Marinette headcanon thread or something?
